Crash & Burn

Well, there's comes that dreaded time in every mother's life...that inevitable evil that must be faced...potty training. Although Luke is now 3 and definitely old enough to conquer this task, I'd normally be in no rush to attempt this but he starts preschool the first of September and he has to be potty trained in order to go. I'd much rather deal with diapers for a few more months and wait until he says he's ready than clean up accidents on my carpet! But here we are just over 1 month away from preschool so we have no choice but to try this thing out. You'd think I'd know what I'm doing since he's my second but the truth is, Karina did it completely on her own. I told her that I'd give her this cute canopy bed for her dolls (garage sale, $2, thank you very much) if she started using the potty. And seriously, that was it! She only had 2 accidents and then was set to go (including night time). So I was spoiled on kid #1. I wish it was that easy for kid #2. Unfortunately, it's not looking like the odds are in my favor.

Brandon took Luke to the store to buy his very own big boy potty, as well as 2 really cool action figures that he can have as soon as he goes pee or poop in his potty. We spent most of the afternoon today on and off of his potty but nothing happened. He was getting a little bored so I decided to juice it up a bit. I brought the potty in front of the TV and told him we could watch a movie together. I sat him on his potty, gave him a couple juice boxes and turned on Finding Nemo. Every so often I'd ask him if the pee pee came out and he'd say no. Finally, the movie was nearing the end and still no pee pee. I asked again and he again said no. I had to go get something in the garage and he wanted to come. I figured it would be no big deal going comando for less than 1 minute so he came out there with me. We came back in and went back to the potty but when I went to sit him on it I noticed the very bottom of his shirt was a little wet. I asked him if he went potty and he said yes. I started to feel all over my carpet trying to find the mess but I couldn't find it. I asked him where he went and he said "out there" and pointed to the garage. I told him to show me and he walked me right over to his pee pee corner and proudly said "see, right there". I made sure to not get upset because I hear I'm supposed to make this whole experience a positive one for him, so I pushed aside what I wanted to say and just said "oh, that's okay. I'll clean it up and we'll try again on your big boy potty." I put a diaper on him and went out to clean the first of I'm sure many messes. When I came back in I decided to move the potty back to it's place since it was getting close to bed time. I looked inside the toilet and while I was in the garage Luke had got a few of his animal toys and disney figurines and hid them inside. I'm not sure if Luke is really understanding the purpose of this thing :)

I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type!!! Can you say "ring around the bum"? (after sitting through a movie) Hang in there the best is yet to come with the whole aiming issue!! I threatened to paint a target on the bottom of the toilet or make the boys forever after sit! Dad didn't particularly feel my pain or agree with my declarations, but then he wasn't the one having to sit while using the facilities or having to clean up every time the target was missed!!!!!!!!!!! Oh the joys of being the mother of a boy! XOXO

Oh Jill... I have NO idea what you're going through, but I wish you luck with all of it! Someday I'll be asking you for advice about this stuff... so take notes! Thanks for sending the link to your blog! I'm sad it took us so long to find each other here. But I'm excited for the chance to keep in touch better.
Love,
Jess

jill, ahhhhh from wyatt and seeing the tail end of halle's potty training experience, it seems like potty training boys and girls is sooooo different. just don't give in to the diapers except for sleeping. put him in underwear pretty much all the time and bring several changes of clothes every where you go. eventually, he'll get it. i wish you the best of luck!

Oh, Jill!
Price is finally potty trained! We gave him2 m&m's every time he went potty and 5 every time he went poo poo! :) The first day he sat on the potty and just went potty a tiny bit each day so he could get m&m's. The next day he figured it out better and it went much better. Pooping has been more difficult, but he's pretty much done it! Our first was like your first, our second wasn't night time trained until she was 4. Price has never had an accident at night, but day time has been much different. Good luck, but just remember, it will really happen! :)

So funny to read, but not funny for you! I was so scared to potty train Caleb b/c he was in his terrible 2/3 stage and wasn't interested in the potty, but we finally did it after he was 3 and it actually went pretty fast. He was totally trained in about a week. I used the book "Toilet training in less than a day" by Nathan Azrin and it worked really well. It's pretty intense and the first few days were HORRIBLE!! But it worked like a charm! Good luck!
